Tonic immobility is sometimes referred to as trauma-induced paralysis, rape-induced paralysis, freezing, or whatever language a survivor uses to describe the reaction they had. There was an involuntary reaction to trauma. It is difficult to move, vocalize, or feel pain. Not able to speak or move, but fully conscious. In some cases, the victim may not be able to articulate what happened to them.
They may have difficulty remembering the details of the event, and may even have a hard time remembering what they were doing at the time. Some survivors may also have trouble remembering how they got to the hospital or how long they spent in the ICU. This is called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it is a serious mental health condition that can affect a person‘s ability to function in everyday life.
Survivors of sexual assault may experience flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks, irritability, anger, depression, anxiety, self-blame, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction (such as anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, compulsive sexual behavior, etc.), and a host of other symptoms.

What causes trauma induced paralysis?
You cannot control your physical response when you have conversion disorder. This response usually involves either your senses or your motor control. When you experience a traumatic event, your body responds in a way that causes you to have a physical reaction. For example, if you’ve had a car accident, your heart may start racing and you may feel dizzy or light-headed.
You may also feel a burning sensation in your chest or throat. These sensations can be caused by a number of things, such as a heart attack, a stroke, an allergic reaction, or a reaction to a medication. If you don’t know what’s causing your symptoms, it’s important to get medical help right away.
What is human tonic immobility?
Tonic immobility is triggered by the perception of inescapable danger and is characterized by profound somnolence and an inability to move the limbs. It is the most common cause of death in children under the age of 5 years. Treatment of TI is based on the assumption that it is caused by damage to the central nervous system (CNS).
The CNS is responsible for the regulation of body temperature, respiration, blood pressure, heart rate, and other vital functions.
In addition, the CNS controls the body‘s response to external stimuli, such as pain, heat, cold, light, sound, touch, taste, smell, etc. The most commonly used drugs to treat TI are benzodiazepines, barbiturates, anticonvulsants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, muscle relaxants (e.g., clonazepam, diazepam), and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). These drugs have been shown to be effective in the treatment of children with TI.
However, there is no evidence that these drugs are safe or effective for treating TI in adults.
What does tonic immobility look like?
When someone is attacked, they may feel stiff, rigid, and unable to move, either for a portion of the attack or the entire event. If you’ve ever heard a survivor say that they justfroze up, then you know what I’m talking about. This is a common reaction to trauma, but it can also be a symptom of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
PTSD is an anxiety disorder that is characterized by intrusive, distressing thoughts, images, feelings, or behaviors that occur after a traumatic experience. PTSD can occur in people of all ages, genders, races, sexual orientations, socio-economic statuses, religious beliefs, political affiliations and more. The symptoms of PTSD are similar to those of other anxiety disorders, such as panic disorder, social phobia and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
However, PTSD differs from these other disorders in that it is more severe and long-lasting. It is also more common in women than in men. People with PTSD may experience flashbacks, nightmares, panic attacks, irritability, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression and other psychological symptoms.
What happens during tonic immobility?
Researchers often use tonic immobility to subdue sharks. When the shark is turned on their back, it’s thought to cause them to enter the state. The shark‘s breathing becomes rhythmic as its muscles relax. The shark is in a state of relaxation when it is released.
How does it feel to be paralyzed?
A person who is paralyzed because of a birth defect or sudden injury can’t feel anything in their body parts. A person who is paralyzed by a medical condition may be able to feel and move their limbs, but they may not be able to use their arms, legs, or face.

Some people who have been paralyzed for a long time may not be able to walk or use their arms or legs. They may also be unable to eat or drink. People who are paralyzed may have a hard time moving their limbs. This is because the nerves that control the muscles that move the limbs are not functioning properly.
Do sharks drown upside down?
When sharks are turned upside down, they go into tonic immobility. The shark suffocated to death after being kept still for fifteen minutes. This is the first recorded case of a predator attacking a great white shark in the wild. The shark was found by a fisherman who was fishing for mackerel off the coast of Cape Town, South Africa.
The shark‘s dorsal fin was still attached to its body when the fisherman found it, so it was not immediately obvious what had happened to it. However, the fins of other great whites have been found in similar situations, and it is thought that this shark may have suffered a similar fate.
